Neal Scores 13, but DACC Uses 4th-Quarter Run to Beat Chargers

Sophomore Cora Neal (Monmouth, Ill./Monmouth-Roseville filled up the stat sheet for the Carl Sandburg College women’s basketball team, but Danville Area used a go-ahead run to start the fourth quarter and defeat the Chargers 55-49 on Thursday night at John M. Lewis Gymnasium.
KEY MOMENTS
- Sandburg (1-2) led 42-38 entering the final period, but the Jaguars (1-3) rattled off 12 unanswered points to take the lead for good. Rachel Spencer’s 3-pointer put DACC up 43-42, and Anabella Falanga finished off the run with five straight points.
- The Jaguars’ run came after the Chargers had used a 7-0 run to close the third quarter and grab the lead. An Alyssa Hopson (Peoria, Ill./Limestone) bucket and two free throws by Allison Westerdahl (Peoria, Ill./Limestone) put Sandburg ahead 39-38. Neal then found freshman Kelsi Legge (Galesburg, Ill./Galesburg) for a 3-pointer with :29.2 left in the third.
SANDBURG STANDOUT
Neal scored a team-best 13 points, grabbed six rebounds, had four of Sandburg’s 15 steals on the night and collected two assists.
OTHER TOP CHARGERS
- Hailey Lovetinsky (Overland Park, Kan./Spring Hills) had 10 points, five steals and two assists.
- Sophie Whitford (Macomb, Ill./Macomb) had eight points and eight rebounds before exiting in the fourth quarter with a knee injury.
FOR THE JAGUARS
- Spencer scored a game-high 14 points, hit 3 of 6 3s, grabbed six rebounds and led all players with six steals,
- Maria Falanga scored 10 points and pulled in a game-best nine rebounds.
UP NEXT FOR SANDBURG
1 p.m. Saturday vs. Madison in the first game of a men’s-women’s doubleheader. The Chargers men’s team faces the Wolfpack at 3 p.m.
